When a Shopify store needs work, most owners end up choosing between two kinds of help: an independent Shopify expert or a Shopify agency. Both can do excellent work. They are built differently, though, and that difference decides which one fits your project.
What a Shopify expert is
A Shopify expert is a developer or designer who specializes in Shopify and usually works independently or in a very small team. Hiring a Shopify expert typically means working directly with the person who writes the Liquid, configures the apps, and fixes the checkout issue. Shopify’s own Partner Directory lists both independent experts and agencies.
What a Shopify agency is
An agency brings a team: account managers, project managers, designers, developers, and often marketers. You get a wider range of skills and more capacity, plus the layers needed to coordinate them.
How they compare
- Who does the work. With an expert, the person you talk to is the person building. With an agency, you usually talk to an account or project manager who briefs the team.
- Cost structure. Agencies carry more overhead (management, sales, offices), and it is built into their rates. Independent experts usually have less overhead. Compare quotes for the same scope rather than assuming either is cheaper.
- Range of skills. An agency can cover branding, photography, ads, email, and development under one roof. An expert covers their specialty deeply and may bring in others for the rest.
- Capacity. An agency can put several people on a big launch. One expert has a limit on how much they can do at once.
- Speed of small changes. For a theme fix or an app integration, going direct to an expert is often faster than a ticket moving through an agency’s process.
- Continuity. With an expert, the same person learns your store over time. Agencies can rotate developers between clients.
When an agency is the better fit
- You need a full rebrand, photography, and a new store designed from scratch.
- You want marketing, ads, and email managed alongside development.
- A big launch needs several people working in parallel against a fixed date.
When a Shopify expert is the better fit
- Your store exists and needs custom sections, product page changes, apps, or speed work.
- Something is broken, and you need someone who can find and fix it directly.
- You are moving from a vintage theme to Online Store 2.0, or from another platform.
- You want an ongoing developer who knows your store, without a retainer.
Many brands use both: an agency for brand and campaigns, and a Shopify expert for the development work in between. Agencies also hire Shopify experts as white-label developers for their own clients.
What to ask before you hire either
- Who will actually write the code, and will I talk to them directly?
- Can you show stores similar to mine, and what exactly did you build on each?
- Will changes be tested on an unpublished theme before going live?
- How do you price: hourly, fixed price, or a retainer, and what is included?
- Who owns the theme code and the app accounts when we are done?
- How quickly do you usually reply, and what happens when something breaks?
